Tabkeep or Toby? Same idea: your tabs on the new tab. Tabkeep does more with it.

Toby and Tabkeep both turn the new tab into a board of saved tabs. Tabkeep adds notes, checklists and timers beside them, cleans up your open tabs on the same page, and works without an account.

We make Tabkeep. Everything about Toby here comes from Toby's own pages, we say where Toby is ahead, and planned Tabkeep features don't count.

The short answer

Choose Tabkeep for a new tab you can work in

Notes, checklists, clusters and timers sit beside your saved tabs, a live sidebar cleans up what is open, and it works without an account.

Choose Toby if a team shares your links

Toby has shared spaces and share links for collections, plus Firefox, a web app and phone apps for opening what you saved.

Your saved tabs get room to explain themselves

A link on its own rarely says why you kept it. In Tabkeep a group can hold saved tabs, rich-text notes, checklists, images, section headers and stopwatch timers side by side, and clusters fold related tabs into one tidy line.

The structure goes deeper too: collections hold spaces, spaces hold groups. When a project needs a free-form layout, an easel gives you a canvas of link cards instead of columns.

No account, and a free plan you can live in

Toby now needs an account; its Guest Mode, which kept data on your computer, was discontinued. Tabkeep stores your workspace in your browser and works fully without signing in. Upgrade to Pro only when you want sync across devices.

Toby's free Starter plan holds 60 saved tabs, and free users at the limit cannot import. Tabkeep's Free plan is smaller, 25 items across two spaces on this device, and needs no account; Pro removes the limits and adds sync.

Open tabs are cleaned up on the same page

Tabkeep's sidebar lists every open tab, marks duplicates and sleeping tabs, closes duplicates in one step, and can put inactive tabs to sleep. Drag any open tab onto a group to save it, or save a whole window as a session. Press Alt+A on any page to find a tab, open, saved or just closed.

Where Toby still fits

Toby is built for teams: shared spaces, share links for collections, and single sign-on on its Team plan. It also runs in Firefox, has a web app, and has phone apps for opening what you saved. Tabkeep is a personal tool for desktop browsers today.

Moving from Toby

  1. 1.In Toby, export your collections as HTML or JSON.
  2. 2.In Tabkeep, open Settings and choose Import from file.
  3. 3.Pick One per site or All in one, then choose where the links go.

Tabkeep brings in the links. Toby notes and tags don't come across, so keep your Toby export until you have checked everything arrived. Full steps are in Import links from another tab manager.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tabkeep free?

There is a Free plan with 1 collection, 2 spaces, 1 easel and 25 items, saved on this device. Pro removes the limits and adds cloud sync and Alt+A for $6 a month or $55 a year.

Does Tabkeep need an account?

No. Everything works without one. An account adds sync between browsers and computers.

Can I share a space with my team?

Not today. Tabkeep is a personal workspace. If shared spaces are the job, Toby is the better pick.

Does Tabkeep work in Firefox?

Not yet. Tabkeep runs in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi and Helium on desktop.

Will my Toby notes come across?

The links will. Tabkeep's file import reads the URLs in a Toby export; notes and tags stay in Toby.

Try Tabkeep out. No account needed.

Tabkeep is a desktop extension for Chrome, Edge, Brave and more.
